Its origin as a nobiliary corporation dates from 1573. By means of a Royal Charter, Felipe II asked the nobility to form local corporations where knights could train for war in times of peace.
The Real Maestranza de Caballería (Royal School of Cavalry) of Ronda is today a private not-for-profit organization, designated in 2002 as being in the public interest. Its main activity is centred around the management of its historical legacy: its archives, the Bullring, the Riding School and a long-standing commitment to education.
