In 1573, on the initiative of the King, a confraternity of knights was formed for the defence of the territory. Four and a half centuries later, the institution has evolved into a not-for-profit cultural association dedicated to preserving, promoting and investigating cultural heritage, and running programmes in the arts and education including equestrianism.
